Il Colle di Carli Rosso di Montalcino DOCG 2021 750mL

When we tasted this Rosso in the cellar with Caterina we thought she'd started us on the Brunello. The knowing smile she gave when I clarified confirms she knows exactly how incredible this wine is. Extraordinary value for money, but unfortunately only made in small quantities each year. Delicious now but Caterina thinks it can age for 15 years. 

Caterina could put her entire production toward Brunello each year, but instead, she uses 100% sangiovese grapes from the same vineyards as the Brunello and ages for 18 months in large format old oak, resulting in the still juicy yet deliciously complex Rosso.

The 2021 Rosso has a smoky, meaty nose like a charred steak but the palate bursts with strawberries, raspberries and black cherries. Spend a half hour with a glass and you might find white pepper, cut grass, dark chocolate and eucalyptus. It’s a wonderful experience to drink it already, but Caterina expects the Rosso to drink well through to 2040, further developing its complexity, balance and tertiary notes. The high acid and medium tannin goes very nicely with a cottage pie in the winter sun.
