We Heart BYO - the ultimate guide to BYO dining in Australia

We unashamedly love BYO. If you've got a cellar of great wine at home, why not take it to pair with food made by some of the most talented chefs in your city? Even the steepest corkage charge ends up being a significant saving on your final bill if you value quality wine and have a decent selection at home.

But what about the restaurant? We know margins are thin for our hospitality friends, and the wine list tends to be where much of the margin on a bill is made, even if that means charging several hundred dollars for an average bottle of bubbly to kick off a meal. Of course, it's up to the restaurant to decide if they want to offer BYO for a particular service, but we think there's a middle ground to be had, which is central to our tips to do BYO right, below.

What our BYO lists offer

With our Vino Cammino BYO lists, created through a combination of targeted research and tips from our mailing list members in each city, you can discover Australia’s best BYO restaurants. We also make sure you know how to make the most of BYO dining in a way that works for you and the restaurant.

Read our tips for how to BYO like a pro and then explore curated city lists on our fully interactive BYO maps, tips for BYO wines to match with the menus, corkage charges, and which seatings BYO is allowed. Make sure you join our mailing list for all the important updates, to be able to give us tips on your favourite spot, and to get a 10% discount on our range of fine wine (we'll tell you what to take, where).

BYO Etiquette guide

Here are our tips for doing BYO right so that you get great value without taking advantage of the restaurant.

  1. Call ahead. We do our best to keep this list current (with regular ad-hoc adjustments and audits every 6 months), but it's always worth confirming to avoid any misunderstandings.
  2. Match the corkage with the quality of your bottle. As a general rule of thumb, we find the corkage (the restaurant charge per bottle for BYO) increases as the food, service and glassware quality increases.
  3. Mix it up a bit and grab something from the restaurant wine list as well as your own bottle(s). The restaurant will appreciate it, and you won't have to lug an esky in the front door.
