Our first taste of Caterina's Rosso di Montalcino was in her cellar and we thought she'd started us on the Brunello. The knowing smile she showed when I gave voice to that assumption confirms she knows exactly how incredible this wine is. Extraordinary value for money, but unfortunately only made in small quantities each year. Delicious now but Caterina says it can age for 15 years. 

While she could put her entire vineyard production toward making Brunello each year, Caterina instead ages these 100% Sangiovese grapes for 18 months in large format old oak, resulting in this deliciously complex Rosso.

2022 will be remembered as the hottest and driest to date in Montalcino, marked by a mild spring with scarce rainfall. A significant rise in temperatures in May caused heavy flower drop and limited cluster development, resulting in small, loosely packed bunches. The 2022 season was characterised by an intense level of sunlight, which Caterina mitigated by keeping the organic matter in the soil high and protecting the vine canopy. Finally, in mid-August, rains arrived, bringing a drop in daytime temperatures and significant nighttime temperature shifts allowing the vines to rebalance the grapes' parameters. The early harvest saw rich flavours and an intriguing aromatic profile.

Here are Caterina's notes in advance of us writing our own after it arrives.

"An intense, brilliant ruby red colour. On the nose, notes of pomegranate, plum, and juniper stand out, followed by hints of orange blossom, sandalwood, sage, and pepper. On the palate, it is savoury and structured, with well-balanced acidity and vibrant tannins. A long finish leaves the mouth dry and full. If properly stored, the bottle can maintain a longevity of 15 years."
