Granatza is a hidden gem of an Italian white wine variety that is only found in the hills around Mamoiada, in the central mountainous terrain of Sardinia.

The Esole version has refreshing acidity, surprisingly muscular structure, with citrus, green apple and hints of honey as it ages. You've probably not tasted many Granatza before, but it is reminiscent of both Chenin Blanc and Riesling (though it is related to neither). 

Until recently, this variety was planted in tiny quantities in Grenache vineyards to provide a refreshing lift to the weighty Cannonau (the Sardinian name for Grenache) produced in the region. Happily, the Mamoiada winemaking community has identified it as something special and producers have planted 100% Granatza vineyards to make wonderful wines like this one. Though similar sounding, it's not another name for Grenache Blanc!
