Cecilia Monte Barbaresco DOCG "Serracapelli" 2019 750mL

Are we allowed to say this is one of Josh's favourite wines? Not just because it's excellent, but also because it was the wine that convinced us to make our first proposal to import the wines of any producer. Barbaresco from the Serracapelli vineyard at the Northern tip of the region. 100% Nebbiolo grapes. 

Tasting note (May 2024): You can expect roses (think dried rose petals), scattered along a path in a pine forest, as well as bay leaves, white pepper, black and red cherries, and lots of cooked and preserved fruit. Blackberry jam, stewed plums, dried figs…

Medium garnet in colour, with well integrated oak (it spent 12 months in mixed format barrels), showing a hint of charred cedar.

So expressive already, especially with 2-3 hours to breathe after opening, but there’s no doubt it will continue to improve over the next 5-10 years. It’s already showing tertiary notes from age with a little leather, earth and balsamic coming through. The high tannins, acid and alcohol are well balanced and typical of a relatively young, full bodied and well structured Barbaresco. We expect the harmony of those elements to be enhanced well into the 2030s.

It’s super versatile to pair with food (we happened to have it with some gnocchi fritti sprinkled with Parmigiano Reggiano, sea salt and black pepper) but would go so well with duck, red meat and, being a barbaresco, anything involving truffles.
