Il Colle di Carli 2020 Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 750mL
Il Colle di Carli 2020 Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 750mL
Brunello di Montalcino is the world's greatest expression of Sangiovese. Caterina Carli makes one of the region's best Brunellos, year in, year out. This is an extraordinary wine, that we are so pleased to have an allocation of. Wonderful young, but a timeless wine that drinks well after many decades.
Organic production, native yeasts, aged in large format old oak for 40 months. Drink it over hours, or days.
Compared to Caterina's Rosso, with 22 additional months in oak for the Brunelllo, the tannins step up a notch, and there are more notable flavours of nutmeg, allspice and cedar. The 2020 is a cracking Brunello, but give it time for the drying tannins to integrate. It will age for decades so stick some in the cellar and we'll keep you posted. If you want one to open now, the 2019 would be our suggestion (even though it still has 50 years of life ahead of it according to Caterina). If you have good advance planning skills, the 2020 was very very good after 36-48 hours open. Pair with a bistecca or mushroom risotto.
In 2020, bud-break occurred just after a spring snowfall, narrowly escaping damage to the buds. A fairly rainy June followed by a dry, hot July created ideal conditions for the vines. The day/night temperature variations ramped up the flavour complexity. Rainfall was significant, but patience allowed Caterina to harvest grapes with a perfect balance between technological and phenolic ripeness, along with a significant aromatic component.
Here are Caterina's notes.
"An intense, brilliant ruby red colour with a slightly garnet rim. On the nose, notes of blueberry, currant, and dog rose stand out, followed by spicy hints of liquorice, helichrysum, and juniper. On the palate, it confirms its richness and elegance, with a very fine tannic structure. Its extraordinary depth fully reflects the vintage. If properly stored, the bottle can maintain a longevity of 30 years."
