While winemaker Caterina Carli tells us that the 2019 could be cellared for 50 years, opening a bottle now already provides a truly joyful experience. How to describe the complexity here without just writing a long list of flavours that come in and out of focus as you meditate over this wine for an hour or two? Well, we don’t have any better ideas. At this young age it already shows cloves, black pepper, mint, thyme, celery salt, blackberries, kalamata olives, cured meat, porcini mushrooms, Haighs dark berry chocs (a nod to our SA heritage), cedar, toasted almonds. There is a lightness and complexity that weaves among that muscle, revealing new surprises and an impossibly long finish with every sip. Organic production, native yeasts, aged in large format old oak for 40 months. Drink it over hours, or days. Our biggest decision for this wine, after we’d bought everything Caterina would sell us, was how much we’d be willing to give up to you wonderful people. Over half of the crop was lost, forcing us to produce only a Chianti Classico Annata. It was, frankly, an emotionally challenging vintage, but the grapes that did make it to the cellar were of stunning quality—few in quantity, but very healthy and with an intriguing flavour concentration. In the end, it became a one-wine vintage, but one with deep personality and character. Whereas the 2023 Chianti Classico shows an intense and determined character, it retains the hallmark crisp and straightforward fruit of Tregole, while also carrying the fleshiness and aromatic complexity inherited from the grapes originally intended for the Riserva and Gran Selezione."

It has a lovely floral and red fruit nose and a hint of freshly popped but not yet buttered popcorn. But it's more than a century. On its original rootstock, it's a survivor of phylloxera which sees most of Europe's vines now on phylloxera resistant American rootstock. So if you don't know when a vineyard was planted, how can you date it at all? Well, we know that it survived the eruption of Etna in 1911; it's now surrounded by cooled lava flows that mercifully split and travelled down each side of it. So let's say it's at least 115 years old (in 2026).

The name Rumex comes from the flower on the label, which, along with the namesake of Monteleone's top Bianco, Anthemis, is the first plant to bring life to the soil after a lava flow.

The nose has cherry, cranberry, cedar and a herby note that two tasters couldn't agree on (our argument was between oregano and celery leaf).
