The knowing smile she showed when I gave voice to that assumption confirms she knows exactly how incredible this wine is. Extraordinary value for money, but unfortunately only made in small quantities each year. Delicious now but Caterina says it can age for 15 years. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWhile she could put her entire vineyard production toward making Brunello each year, Caterina instead ages these 100% Sangiovese grapes for 18 months in large format old oak, resulting in this deliciously complex Rosso.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe 2022 will age well (15 years, says Caterina) but it's really wonderful now. We couldn't agree on how best to describe the tannins, but lovely, soft, smooth, fine and silky all hit the mark. The nose has an extraordinary umami character with miso mushroom and beef stock notes. The palate shifts to cranberries and sour cherries. Caterina has staked her claim on our best value red once again.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e2022 will be remembered as the hottest and driest to date in Montalcino, marked by a mild spring with scarce rainfall. A significant rise in temperatures in May caused heavy flower drop and limited cluster development, resulting in small, loosely packed bunches. The 2022 season was characterised by an intense level of sunlight, which Caterina mitigated by keeping the organic matter in the soil high and protecting the vine canopy. Finally, in mid-August, rains arrived, bringing a drop in daytime temperatures and significant nighttime temperature shifts allowing the vines to rebalance the grapes' parameters. The early harvest saw rich flavours and an intriguing aromatic profile.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHere are Caterina's own notes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\"\u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003eAn intense, brilliant ruby red colour. On the nose, notes of pomegranate, plum, and juniper stand out, followed by hints of orange blossom, sandalwood, sage, and pepper. On the palate, it is savoury and structured, with well-balanced acidity and vibrant tannins. A long finish leaves the mouth dry and full. The name Fût de Chêne (sometimes Élevé en Fût on the label) is a reference to it being aged in French oak for 6 months. It then spends 6 years in the cellar on lees prior to disgorgment. Intense and rich buttered toast, buttery croissant, roasted hazelnut bouquet leads into a full, rich and ample palate in which the acidity is bright and cleansing and leavens the richness and weight of flavour. The finish lingers on very long, and the balance is impressive. A wine of substantial aged complexity. Delicious!
