While winemaker Caterina Carli tells us that the 2019 could be cellared for 50 years, opening a bottle now already provides a truly joyful experience. How to describe the complexity here without just writing a long list of flavours that come in and out of focus as you meditate over this wine for an hour or two? Well, we don’t have any better ideas. At this young age it already shows cloves, black pepper, mint, thyme, celery salt, blackberries, kalamata olives, cured meat, porcini mushrooms, Haighs dark berry chocs (a nod to our SA heritage), cedar, toasted almonds. There is a lightness and complexity that weaves among that muscle, revealing new surprises and an impossibly long finish with every sip. Organic production, native yeasts, aged in large format old oak for 40 months. Drink it over hours, or days. Our biggest decision for this wine, after we’d bought everything Caterina would sell us, was how much we’d be willing to give up to you wonderful people. We’ve stocked up our personal cellar with a dozen to enjoy over the coming decades and you should too (after joining our mailing list at the bottom of the page for a discount code). The knowing smile she showed when I gave voice to that assumption confirms she knows exactly how incredible this wine is. Extraordinary value for money, but unfortunately only made in small quantities each year. Delicious now but Caterina says it can age for 15 years.

While she could put her entire vineyard production toward making Brunello each year, Caterina instead ages these 100% Sangiovese grapes for 18 months in large format old oak, resulting in this deliciously complex Rosso.

The 2022 will age well (15 years, says Caterina) but it's really wonderful now. We couldn't agree on how best to describe the tannins, but lovely, soft, smooth, fine and silky all hit the mark. The nose has an extraordinary umami character with miso mushroom and beef stock notes. The palate shifts to cranberries and sour cherries. Caterina has staked her claim on our best value red once again.

2022 will be remembered as the hottest and driest to date in Montalcino, marked by a mild spring with scarce rainfall. A significant rise in temperatures in May caused heavy flower drop and limited cluster development, resulting in small, loosely packed bunches. The 2022 season was characterised by an intense level of sunlight, which Caterina mitigated by keeping the organic matter in the soil high and protecting the vine canopy. Finally, in mid-August, rains arrived, bringing a drop in daytime temperatures and significant nighttime temperature shifts allowing the vines to rebalance the grapes' parameters. The early harvest saw rich flavours and an intriguing aromatic profile.

Here are Caterina's own notes.

"An intense, brilliant ruby red colour. On the nose, notes of pomegranate, plum, and juniper stand out, followed by hints of orange blossom, sandalwood, sage, and pepper. If properly stored, the bottle can maintain a longevity of 15 years."

← Back to Producer range

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0630/2135/1086/files/il-colle-di-carli-bottiglia-rosso-2024-square-min.png?v=1774071238
domaine-conte-et-filles-cognac-petite-champagne-3-year-old-43-4-700ml
Domaine Conte et Filles Cognac - Petite Champagne 3 Year Old 43.4% 700mL

The 3 year old Cognac from Domaine Conte et Filles is the youngest in their range of Cognacs.
